If you don’t know who Sam Vermiliyea is yet, you soon will.

Vermiliyea is a sophomore running back for Monroe Academy, and he ran through and around the Meadowview defense in the Volunteers’ 33-0 win at Meadowview on Friday.

“We played a good team. There ain’t no doubt about that,” said Meadowview coach Rick Jackson. “We got exploited and exposed in some areas.”

Vermiliyea had 183 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns, leading Monroe to a 27-0 halftime lead.

He finished with 207 yards on 18 carries, as the Volunteers took him in the third quarter. The defense kept Meadowview quarterback Randal Hamilton running for his life all night.

The Volunteers jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead on an 8-play, 61-yard drive. Vermiliyea capped the drive with a 13-yard run.

“They set the tone of the game early and controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides all night long,” said Jackson. “We did everything we did the last two weeks and sometimes you just run into matchup problems.”

The defense forced a three-and-out, and the Volunteers took advantage. They appeared unstoppable on a 6-play 63-yard drive Dustin Ellison hooked with Sam Vermiliiyea’s brother, Paul, on a 54-yard flea flicker to set Monroe up on the Trojan 9. Ellison drove in from the 1-yard-line, and the Trojans led 13-0.

Vermiliyea ran for his second touchdown on a 5-yard scamper to cap a 9-play, 59-yard drive, and the Volunteers led 20-0.

But he wasn’t done. On the first play of the Volunteers’ next possession, he rushed for a 68-yard touchdown and Monroe led 27-0 at the half.

Monroe receiver Willis Webb hauled in a 46 –yard touchdown pass from Ellison to finish the scoring at 33-0.

“We’ve got to go back to the drawing board and we’ve got to regroup Monday,” said Jackson. “We’ve got to put this one behind us as good as we can.”

With the loss, the Trojans fell to 2-1 on the season, and are now a game back of the 3-0 Volunteers in the Region 2 standings.
