Weather forces shuffling of schedules

Wednesday’s weather has forced the cancellation of all games scheduled for Bloch Park and the Dallas County Softball Complex prior to Monday.

Southside’s fastpitch softball tournament, which was scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. on Friday at the Dallas County Softball Complex, has been rescheduled for April 4. The tournament was to follow a two-day format but will now be completed in one.

Selma Parks and Recreation program director Tracy Williams said heavy rains all but made fielding any games an impossibility.

“It had to be (canceled),” said Williams. “You get in the outfield and get three inches of rain like we had, and it still didn’t totally dry out from the last time.”

The cancellations also include Southside’s baseball game with Greensboro, scheduled for Thursday at 3:30. The rainout comes as a relief to Southside coach LaMorris Jones as the Panthers recuperate from Monday’s doubleheader at Livingston.

“It gives our pitchers a chance to rest their arms up,” said Jones. “There’s a little bit of concern because we were kind of on a run. We might be a little rusty.”

The weather has also forced Southside’s baseball team to change up the practice routine. The Panthers may have to conduct workouts and drills indoors.

“We’re looking at the gym as an option, but we’ve got to share that with the softball team,” said Jones. “We all know there’s only so much you can do in a gym.”

The Parks and Recreation Department projects that the fields at Bloch Park and the complex will not be ready until Monday, provided that additional rain holds off over weekend.

Selma’s baseball contest with Bibb County remains scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, but will depend the weather.

“As of now we’re playing, but (Selma Parks and Recreation director Elton) Reece said it depends on [Friday],” said Selma coach Warren Brown. “We’ll know more [Friday].”
