ASWA preseason high school football rankings released

Published 9:17 pm Monday, August 6, 2018

The 2018 preseason rankings were released this past Sunday night. None of the teams in Selma and Dallas County were voted in the top-10 of their respective classifications, but they do have some of the highly-ranked teams on their schedules.

In Class 6A, the Selma High Saints are in the same region as No. 2 Wetumpka and No.6 Opelika. Last season, Wetumpka went 13-2 and lost in the state championship game. Opelika was 9-4 in 2017, and made it to the third round of the state playoffs.

The Saints will also play Linden High School, which is the No.5 ranked Class 1A team. Linden went 7-4 this past season.

The Saints travel to play Opelika in week three, at Linden in week six and host Wetumpka in week nine.

Southside High School only has one top-10 opponent on its schedule, which is No. 10 St. James. The former Class 4A school was placed in Southside’s region after the AHSAA’s bi-annual reclassification. St. James was 8-4 this past season, made it to the playoffs and will be the final team on the Southside Panthers’ regular season schedule in 2018.

The Keith High Bears were sent down to Class 1A after the reclassification, and join a difficult division. They have No. 5 Linden in week three and No. 6 Maplesville in week five.

The Ellwood Christian Eagles are in the same division with the Bears, and will also have to face Linden and Maplesville this season. The Eagles travel to Maplesville in week seven, and host Linden in week 10.
