Dallas County High School’s basketball season is over but the basketball career of senior point guard Brandon Holmes will continue.

Holmes signed his letter of intent to attend Auburn University-Montgomery Friday.

“I feel very excited to play basketball at the next level,” Holmes said. “But I am more grateful to continue my education at AUM.”

Holmes was a three-year starter at point guard for Dallas County and averaged 20.6 points, five steals and just over eight assists a game in his senior season.

“He was the consummate teammate,” said Dallas County head basketball coach Willie Moore. “He could have scored more but he was more concerned with team play than individual play.”

Holmes’ career at Dallas County drew the attention of AUM head basketball coach Larry Chapman.

“We are really selective as to who we invite to play,” Chapman said. “We knew he was a very good basketball player and point player, and point guards are like hen’s teeth, they are rare.”

Holmes was looking at Florida A&M University, Tuskegee and Wallace Selma Community College as well as AUM.

Academic excellence was why he decided to play at AUM, Holmes said.

“Academics are a strength at AUM, that is no joke,” Chapman said, “and it is a good fit for us and for him.”

Several people attended the signing, including Holmes’ teammates, coaches and his mother, Bernice King.

“I am very excited and it is truly a blessing and it is a joyous occasion for me and my family to see him continue his education and have this opportunity to sign with AUM,” King said.

Holmes led his team to two regional tournament appearances, was 4A Area 4 Tournament MVP three consecutive years and was an All-State selection, Moore said.

Holmes is the fourth All-State Basketball player in the last four seasons for the Hornets.
