The Meadowview Christian School Trojans came back from six down to tie the game up, but the Morgan Academy Senators were able to pull out a 9-8 win on Monday at Bloch Park.

Jeremy Carter, head baseball coach of Morgan (3-6), said the Senators played as a team in Monday’s win.

“It’s good for the kids to finally come together. You’ve got to learn to win as a team first before you can just play,” Carter said, “and tonight they showed that they can get together, get behind each other and just play ball. They did, and I was proud of them.”

Morgan led 8-2 in the bottom of the fifth, but Meadowview started to come back, as the Senators threw the ball away at first, allowing Hunter Hale to score from third and bring the Trojans closer at 8-3.

Meadowview kept it’s momentum going, as Coulter Johnson hit a shot to right center field and doubled, allowing Wes Tipton to score from third and make the score 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

Meadowview scored once more in the inning, as Johnson scored from third when a pitch got by the Morgan catcher to make it 8-5.

Meadowview scored again in the bottom of the sixth, as Tipton hit the ball to deep right field to drive in two runners and make the score 8-7.

Tipton tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth, scoring from third after an out at first allowed him to advance and beat the play at the plate.

The Senators took the lead for good in the top of the eighth, as Will Elliott hit the ball in the gap at right field and drove in Trevor Bates to make it a 9-8 game.

Morgan pitcher Alex Davis struck out three of four batters in the bottom of the eighth to close the game for the Senators.

Scott Gunter, head baseball coach of Meadowview (1-6), said his team played hard and had a shot to win.

“I thought we played real well. Sometimes we get down, but we come back tonight, tied it up, and I thought we had a chance to win it,” Gunter said. “We’re a young team. We played hard.”

Both teams participated in the Morgan/Pepsi Baseball Classic over the weekend, and both coaches said they learned some key things about their teams in the two-day event.

“We were lacking pitching. We played a lot of games the week before our classic. We went 0-3 in our classic, and we threw ten guys in three ball games just to save our arms because we’ve got area play coming up,” Carter said. “We were just trying to find who could pitch, who could play, and just hitting the ball around.”

Gunter said pitching also affected the Trojans over the weekend.

“We enjoyed it. It was fun playing different teams that we hadn’t played before,” Gunter said. “We won one game and lost three. We were in another game real close. I’ve got one returning pitcher from last year’s team and we had seven games that week, so it’s tough when you’ve got all the young pitchers.”
