SELMA — Several kids take turns jumping into the cool water looking to escape the scorching heat.

After weeks of being closed due to vandalism, the Dinkins Pool is now open.

Someone had broken into the facility and stolen copper pipes that rendered both the bathrooms and the pool’s water pump useless, Tracy Williams, programs director for the Selma recreation department, said.

“They kicked in the wall and took all the copper pipes,” Williams said. “We had to replace the main water line that supplies the pool.”

Williams said the repairs cost $4,000.

The pool’s opening was delayed more than three weeks before opening Wednesday.

“It’s important for that community because it gives the kids somewhere to go,” Williams said. “There are lifeguards on duty, there’s a basketball court and a playground there, so there’s more than one thing to do.”

Jeffrey McMillan, one of the kids at the pool Friday afternoon, said he likes coming there because it’s too hot to do anything else.

“I’ve been here every day,” McMillan said. “I play basketball out here, too. I come here just to have fun.”

Foster Davis, a lifeguard at the pool, said about 140-150 people have come every day.

The pool’s hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 6 p.m.
