Pitcher Matthew Davis is the second Morgan Academy baseball player to land a Division I scholarship.

Davis has verbally committed to play at Arkansas-Little Rock next year.  After visiting the Little Rock campus, Davis chose UALR.

“I went to UALR and visited their campus, I liked what the coaches had to say and I liked the campus and facilities,” Davis said.

Morgan Academy baseball coach Stephen Clements said UALR is getting an outstanding player with good morals.

“I’m excited for Matthew,” Clements said. “He’s a great kid that has worked hard to get where he is. UALR is not only getting a great player but getting a great young man. I know God has big plans for Matthew and I cannot wait to watch them unfold.”

Davis said the long-distance from Selma didn’t affect him choosing the Trojans, a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

“My parents supported my decision,” Davis said. “They’ll be attending my games.”

Davis said the verbal commitment gives him the opportunity to focus on his senior year and the 2020 season.

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately,” Davis said. “By committing now, it takes a lot of pressure off me.”

Davis played a big role as Morgan Academy (30-3) earned a berth in the AISA State baseball finals. He made The Selma Times-Journal’s All-Dallas County team and was an AISA All-Star selection.

Earlier this month, Senators pitcher Jeremy Lee committed to South Alabama.
