OXFORD — The Meadowview Christian volleyball team (12-5) was eliminated from the Alabama Christian Athletic Association state tournament Friday after losing two matches to Providence Christian and Tabernacle Christian.

Meadowview lost its first match to Providence 25-23, 17-25, 13-15 and its second match to Tabernacle 12-25, 25-18, 3-15 in Oxford. Trojans head coach Tim Burton said he thought his team buckled under the pressure.

“We won the first set we played, and I think they just tensed up and couldn’t get it together,” Burton said.

Burton had high expectations for his team going into the playoffs, and said he had hoped for a state championship.

“If they played like they’re supposed to, like they always have, we should be undefeated right now,” Burton said.

Burton said he thought Mallory Freine, Shelby Boswell and Alyssa Verhoff all played well in Oxford. He is looking forward to having them all back next year to make another run at the state title. While Burton wasn’t happy with the result, he admitted he enjoyed the journey.

“The season’s over and we had a good time,” Burton said.

Meadowview had only lost three times all year before Friday.
