Meadowview Christian opened its first ever season as a 6-man football team against Cullman Christian in August and the results weren’t pretty.

Using speed to its advantage, Cullman raced up and down the field in a dominant 80-6 victory. It was a tough welcoming to 6-man football for the Trojans and the kind of loss that would derail many seasons.

Meadowview refused to let that happen.

“We didn’t get real discouraged after that first game,” said Meadowview Christian head coach Lebo Jones. “I told the boys that this was a new game for us and we had never seen Cullman play, and I’d never coached a 6-man game before and I’d never had seen one. It was just a learning experience.”

Jones and the Trojans are clearly fast learners.

Meadowview has won five consecutive games since and has locked up the No. 2 seed in the Christian Football Association’s playoffs. The Trojans are in the midst of a bye week and play Conecuh Springs Oct. 16. No matter what happens, Jones said the Trojans will host a playoff game Oct. 30.

Meadowview will play Victory-Baptist, a team the Trojans defeated 27-26 earlier this year.

“We’re real proud of the boys,” Jones said. “I think it’s been since ’07 since they’ve been the playoffs and I know this is a different league, but football is football.  The kids are working hard, and it’s really a stepping stone for our program to where we want to eventually be back at.”

As it turns out, the Cullman team that beat Meadowview is pretty good too. Cullman is the only undefeated team in the CFA’s 6-man division and has only given up 37 points all season.

“We want to play Cullman again,” Jones said. “That’s our ultimate goal is to play them again and try to beat them, but we’ve got to get by Victory first, a real good team we only beat by one point.”

Jones said the championship game will be played at Victory in Millbrook on Nov. 6.

The Trojans are the only team in Dallas County to have locked up a playoff spot thus far, although several others will have chances in the next few weeks. Here’s a look at what each local team has left and how their playoff chances are looking:

Morgan Academy Senators

What a two weeks it’s been for the Senators. Back-to-back comeback victories has Morgan Academy with a .500 record after six games for the first time since 2013 and in position to make its first playoff appearance since 2011.

The Senators sit in second place in class AAA, region 2, behind only Monroe Academy (7-0, 4-0), who defeated Morgan in its opener. Morgan’s next three games are against region opponents — Escambia, Fort Dale and Hooper — and all three are badly in need of wins to stay alive for a playoff spot.

Two region wins would likely secure a playoff spot for the Senators, while one may leave Morgan sweating a bit down the stretch.

Selma Saints

It’s going to be an uphill climb for Selma to get back into the class 6A playoffs.

The Saints likely need wins in their final two area games and some help from other teams in class 6A, region 4 to have a real chance at the playoffs. However, there is some good news for the Saints.

Selma plays its two remaining region games against Bessemer City and Northridge, two of the teams ahead of them in the region standings.

A loss in either game would likely eliminate Selma from postseason contention.

Dallas County Hornets

Three consecutive wins have Dallas County at 4-2 overall and in position to end an 11-year playoff drought.

The Hornets face winless Wilcox Central Friday in a game that takes on added importance because of Dallas County’s schedule moving forward.

After Wilcox, Dallas County plays region heavyweights Calera (5-1) and Demopolis (5-1). One win may get it done, but two would lock up a playoff spot for Dallas County.

If the Hornets win out, there’s a chance they’d win the region in a tiebreaker. A lot depends on how Helena, who beat the Hornets earlier this year, fares down the stretch.

Southside Panthers

The good news for Southside is that the Panthers still have three region games left to play.

The bad news is Southside will probably need to win all of them to have a shot at the playoffs. The Panthers still play UMS-Wright, Clarke County and W.S. Neal in class 4A, region 1 games.

Keith Bears

Ellwood Christian Eagles

Maplesville has locked up a playoff spot, leaving Linden, A.L. Johnson, Keith and Ellwood Christian to battle for the other three available spots in class 1A, region 4. Keith can’t do anything to advance its position because it’s already played all four of its region games. Ellwood has games against A.L. Johnson and Maplesville ahead. If the Eagles win one of those two, there’s a chance there could be a three-way tie for third and fourth.
