Meadowview Christian School (2-1) put on a show for fans at its first home game of the season Friday by defeating Clay County Christian Academy (0-2) 32-21.

Trojans Head Coach Lebo Jones said getting a win in the first home game was a good feeling, and he was excited for his players.

“It feels great,” Jones said. “We’re 2-1 now going into a bye week next week and we got a few people banged up, and we’ll have a chance to get them healthy and we’re just looking forward to playing out next game.”

The story of the night was JeVar McGuire, who had 191 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the night.

“JeVar McGuire had a great game. He’s a big strong kid; still learning how to run the ball, really he has never run the ball a whole lot, but once he really learns how to run the ball, he’s really going to be something,” Jones said. “He had a great game, just a good athlete and a good kid. He was the difference tonight.”

McGuire got things started early in the game with a 14-yard run to the 2-yard line and a touchdown on the next play making the score 6-0 before the one-point conversion made it 7-0.

With less than three minutes left in the first, McGuire fumbled the ball and Clay County recovered. But McGuire would make up for it early in the second with a 25-yard run for his second touchdown of the night. With the extra points attempt no good, the score was 13-0.

Dakota Sanders had a big night as well with a 5-yard touchdown late in the second, three tackles for a loss, one sack and a forced fumble.

After his touchdown, the extra point conversion was no good, making the score 19-0.

The night was going good for the Trojans at halftime with a lead of 19-0, but Clay County made them work to keep the lead in the third quarter.

Just over a minute into the third quarter, Jaedon Smith ran the ball 7 yards for Clay County’s first score of the night. Hunter Flowers took the ball in for the extra point and brought the score to 19-7.

Clay County struck again with just over one minute left in the third quarter when Smith ran the ball 20-yards for a touchdown and Zack Hodnett tacked on an extra point to make it 19-14.

But after an exciting third quarter for Clay, it wouldn’t score again until right at the end of the game.

“We couldn’t stop their size and we couldn’t score on them. Basically we started trying to trick them with extreme running and passing every play. We had to spread that size out,” said Clay head coach Joe Haynes. “We couldn’t control them and they just run it right down our throats.”

Chase Shipman added on six more points for Meadowview with a 13-yard touchdown run and McGuire added a point with a run after the play to make the score 26-14.

McGuire wasn’t done yet. After Tyler Sebren intercepted the ball for Meadowview, McGuire ran 15-yards for a touchdown to make it 32-14.

Clay County answered with only 20 seconds left in the game when Smith took off with a 60 yard run for a touchdown. Garrett Meek added on the extra point to make the final score 32-21.

“I think we were in better shape than they were. I think they got tired and we really didn’t. We wore them out in the fourth quarter,” Jones said. “They came back in their first two possessions in the second half and they scored and we got a little worried. We ended up pounding it and running it down their throat and ended up wearing them out in the fourth quarter and that was the difference for us.”
