Ellwood Christian head coach Eric Martinear told his team that if they won Friday at A.L. Johnson, they’d be in the playoffs for the first time in two years.

The Eagles more than delivered.

Jalen Furlow threw a touchdown and ran for another and Rayford Mitchell scored two touchdowns as Ellwood upset A.L. Johnson 40-26 to finish third in Class 1A, region 4.

“This is the biggest win in school history because we clinched the third seed and we are .500 in the region,” Martinear said. “That’s what we are all about, winning region games.”

The Eagles (4-5) win eliminated Keith and Sunshine from playoff contention.

Ellwood trailed 24-12 at halftime, but the Eagles refused to go down Friday.

“We were down at halftime and we came back with an answer and made consecutive stops on defense,” Martinear said. “”We got some turnovers. We just played as a team.”

Ellwood Christian will look to get back to .500 on the season next week against Selma High School at Memorial Stadium.
