CHILDERSBURG — Dallas County fell to Childersburg 41-13 Friday night in a game where the Tigers clinched a playoff spot.

Childersburg (6-2) received the opening kickoff. The Tigers relied heavily on the arm of quarterback Zack Lightsey, who completed five passes on the opening drive, including a two-yard pass to Tim Tilley for a touchdown. The PAT was blocked, making it 6-0.

The Childersburg defense forced a three-and-out and partially blocked the Dallas County punt, giving Childersburg a short field. With the team taking over at the Dallas County 18-yard line, Lightsey connected with Justin Baker for a touchdown. The PAT was good to give Childersburg a 13-0 lead.

Lightsey scored two more times as the Tigers continued to roll, opening up a 41-0 lead in the third quarter.

“We didn’t execute very well on offense and defense,” Dallas County head coach Barry Colburn said. “They put up 34 points in the first half. We’ve just got a lot of work to do and we’ve got a lot of young kids. It’s a process. It’s going to take some time. The kids play hard. We just haven’t bought in to what we’re trying to do yet. When they decide to do that, we’ll win some ball games.”

Autaugaville 22 Keith 20

AUTAUGAVILLE — The Keith Bears, desperately in need of a win to keep pace in the playoff race, jumped out to a 20-0 lead against Autaugaville Friday night, but the Eagles stormed back to steal the game in the second half.

“I told them we blew a golden opportunity,” Keith head coach Harry Crum said. “We lost our focus. We just have to stay focused for four quarters.”

The Bears may end up being in better shape than they expected after losing Friday night. Ellwood Christian and Akron also lost in the Class 1A, Region 3 meaning the Bears control their own destiny going into next week’s game against Maplesville.

Turnovers doom Ellwood in loss to Sunshine

NEWBERN — Ellwood Christian fumbled three times inside the 10-yard line in their 16-6 loss to Sunshine Friday night.

Jalen Furlow scored Ellwood’s lone touchdown of the night to get the Eagles within 8-6 in the third quarter, but that was as close as the score would get the rest of the game. Next week, Ellwood Christian takes on Akron. If the Eagles beat the Rams, they still have a shot at making the playoffs.

Pickens Academy 42, Meadowview Christian 14

The Meadowview Christian Trojans were unable to build on last week’s first victory of the season, falling 42-14 to Pickens Academy on Friday night.

The Trojans will host Sparta Academy next week.
