Local squads prep for postseason as area tourneys take shape

With area play wrapped up, local Alabama High School Athletic Association boys and girls basketball teams are now preparing for the start of area tournaments.

Local schools are set to begin area tournament play next week, with some already aware of their tournament opponents, and others in a holding pattern.

The Keith High School Bears boys (17-9, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A) and girls (22-3, ranked No. 9 in Class 1A) will both host the Class 1A Area 5 tournament starting on Tuesday, Feb. 5.

After going through the area slate undefeated, the Keith boys and girls teams each earned a bye and will play their first games on Friday, Feb. 8.

The Class 1A Area 5 tournament will also include area opponent Ellwood Christian Academy.

The Southside High School Panthers boys and girls teams will have to travel to Straughn High School for the Class 3A Area 2 tournament.

The Southside girls will play Opp on Friday, Feb. 8 at 3:30 p.m., while the boys will play Excel on Feb. 8 starting at 5:30 p.m.

The Selma High School Saints boys and girls basketball teams will both travel to Sumter Central for the Class 5A Area 6 tournament.

The Lady Saints will play Demopolis on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m., while the Selma boys will play host Sumter Central on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m.

The Dallas County High School Hornets boys and girls have yet to have their area tournament site determined.

The Dallas County boys (21-5, 5-1, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A) will have a shot to host the Class 4A Area 6 tournament, as the meeting determining which team will host was pushed back to Thursday due to inclement weather.
