ORRVILLE — With stifling defense and quality shooting the Keith Lady Bears rolled to the Class 1A, Area 5 tournament championship with a 57-30 win over the Akron Lady Rams.

The Lady Bears (20-5) were led by eighth grader Harriet Winchester, who posted 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half, with 10 points coming in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Cecil Williams, while praising his girls, said there was still room for improvement if his team was going to make a serious run at the state championship — especially on defense.

“We made some mistakes, we missed some assignments and need to play better zone,” he said.

Akron actually led 2-0 in the first few minutes of the game, but Keith responded with tough inside play off the boards and tied the game at 4-4 before going on an 8-0 run to end the first quarter ahead 12-4.
