DIXON MILLS — With a lopsided win over Marengo County High School Friday, the Keith Bears recorded their best regular season record since 2008 and head into the first round of the Class 1A playoffs with tremendous momentum.

The Bears, who finish the season 8-2, crushed Marengo 42-6, making Friday’s game the fifth time this season they have scored 40 points or more.

“We did come out a little flat early, but once we got rolling, everything seemed to fall into place,” Keith head coach Harry Crum said.

Charles Johnson had two touchdowns for the Bears, one for 40 yards and another, a 75-yard scamper.

Bobby Barnes also had two touchdowns, one on a fumble recovery returned for a score and the other coming from a 30-yard pass from quarterback Maurice Crumpton.

Crumpton added a 2-yard touchdown of his own, while Terrell Velazquez tacked on a 50-yard touchdown run for good measure.

In the one-sided game, the most suspenseful part of the evening came when Barnes connected on a drop kick for an extra point, a feat Crum said “probably hasn’t been attempted or made in high school football in Alabama in a very long time.”

The win finishes up the regular season, with the Bears finishing in third place in Class 1A Region 4 standings.

Because of their third place finish, the Bears will travel to take on Sweet Water in the first round of the playoffs.

Interestingly enough, the two teams, which are separated by just over 50 miles, have never played.

The game, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4, is set to kickoff at 7 p.m.
