The Morgan Academy boys and girls tennis squads, under the leadership of Baxter Stinson, are off to a fast start this season.

Both teams defeated Fort Dale Academy Thursday afternoon to remain undefeated.

The win, volunteer coach Frances Henderson said, was especially gratifying for the girls team.

“It was really big for them because last year Fort Dale won the state championship and we came in second,” she said. “That was a game the girls really wanted to win.”

Both teams, she said, have come to the court with a business-like attitude this season.

“They are on a mission,” she said. “They have been really serious about winning state.”

Both squads, Henderson said, are back from last season with more experience and maturity.

“They are probably the best squads we have seen,” she said. “We have a really solid group on both teams.”

In addition to Fort Dale, the squads have also netted wins over Tuscaloosa Academy, Monroe Academy, Kingwood Christian School and Prattville Christian.

The girls team is anchored by No. 1 Caroline Sherer, followed by Shelby Moore in the No. 2 slot. Sarah Reeves is at No. 3 followed by Rachel Sherer at No. 4 and Catherine Armstrong at No. 5.

The No.1 doubles team consists of Armstrong and Reeves and the No. 2 doubles team is Moore and Rachel Sherer.

The boys No. 1 is Reed Stewart followed by Jody Glover at No. 2. Hain Beers is No. 3 followed by McCain Blevins at No.4 and Kyle Stewart at No. 5.

Stewart and Glover are the No. 1 doubles team and Beers and McCain make up the No.2 spot. The team returns to action March 29 when they host Monroe Academy.
