The third day of Cincinnati Bengals training camp got off to a scary start for Selma native Michael Johnson, who was carted off the field Sunday with a knee injury.

Luckily, it looks like the injury isn’t as bad as first feared.

NFL.com reported Monday that Johnson’s injury is a MCL sprain, which typically keeps a player off the field for four to six weeks. If that timeline holds true, Johnson could be back in time for the Bengals regular season opener against Oakland on Sept. 13 — exactly six weeks from the day the injury occurred.

Johnson reportedly injured his knee Sunday during a nine-on-seven drill during the Bengals first practice of the year in shoulder pads.

Johnson spent the first five years of his NFL career in Cincinnati, and he re-signed there during the offseason on a four year, $20 million deal.

In July, Johnson held his annual FunFest in Selma and talked about the upcoming season.

“When the season ended, I said I will never have another year, let alone, season like the one that was before,” Johnson said of 2014, which didn’t live up to his expectations. “I made up my mind and God has continued to bless me. I’ve put in the work, and I continue to believe that his will be the season of my life. It has been the best year of my life so far.”

The Dallas County High School alumnus has 154 total tackles, 30.5 sacks and three interceptions during his career, but he’s still chasing his first Super Bowl ring.

“All we need to do is win that one game and I think we are going to skyrocket. I’m thankful that I got to come back and be a part of that,” Johnson said at his FunFest event. “I’m still chasing my first championship ever in life and I really believe I’m going to get one in Cincinnati before it’s over.”
