Entering the final day of the Alabama High School Athletic Association track and field championships in Gulf Shores, Southside’s Christopher Davis already had a fourth place finish to his credit this weekend, but it’s clear he wasn’t satisfied.

Davis paired his fourth in the 4A boys’ triple jump from Friday with a second place showing in the 4A boys’ high jump Saturday. Davis jumped an even 6-foot total, which was higher than the 5-foot-8 total he had qualified with.

“That fourth place finish Friday really opened his eyes to the way he was going to have compete to get a medal,” said Southside head coach Jason Bothwell. “He cleared every jump up until 6-foot-2 on the first try.”

Davis was responsible for all 13 of the Panthers’ points over the weekend as Southside came in 19th overall in the 4A boys team rankings. With 95 points, UMS-Wright won the 4A boys competition.

“It’s been really easy to coach him” Bothwell said of Davis. “He’s very coachable kid that listens and those are the kind of kids you always want to coach.”

Southside’s Antanya Dudley also competed Saturday, finishing 15th overall in the 4A girls discus throw.

Like the Panthers, Dallas County only competed in two events Saturday.

The Hornets’ Quintavis Parker finished seventh overall in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.85 seconds and came in eighth in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles.

Dallas County, in its first year in 5A, finished 29th overall in the 5A boys’ standings with a total of six points. St. Paul’s won the 5A boys championship with 90 points.

Furlow finishes second overall in 1A boys long jump

In Cullman, Ellwood Christian’s Jalen Furlow finished second overall in the 1A boys long jump with a total of 21 feet, 3.5 inches. Furlow finished second to Linden’s Javarius Goins.

Furlow’s second place finish gave Ellwood eight points and a 20th place finish overall in the 1A boys standings.

Marion County won the 1A boys competition with 117 points.

The Eagles’ Jonathan Pettway also finished tenth overall in Saturday’s 800-meter run.
