PLANTERSVILLE — Dallas County rallied in two games Tuesday against county rival Selma to win both games of a doubleheader.

Although it didn’t feel like the middle of spring due to the cold weather and constant rain, the Saints (7-10) and Hornets (14-4) fought for momentum heading into area tournaments in Demopolis and Tuscaloosa Thursday.

Both teams ended the night with some bright spots to build on. For Dallas County, those moments came in the form of two come-from-behind victories spearheaded by a defense that kept the Selma offense from doing much damage.

“It’s always important to go into tournament play off of a win,” said Hornets head coach Willie Moore.

Selma led the first game 2-1 only to watch the Hornets rally back with a six run second inning. Jkiera Peterson tied the game with a single up the middle and Keyondra Fletcher gave Dallas County the lead for good with a single into center field.

Taylor Moore’s double scored Lindsey McIlwain and Brittney Brown to put Dallas County up 7-2 after poor throws on the play from the Saints.

Selma cut the score to 7-5 after a double by Denetra Whitlock, but the Saints couldn’t pull any closer. Fatima Ford struck out with two runners on to end the inning.

Dallas County scored three in the third to extend the lead to 10-5 and scored five additional runs in the fourth to end the contest with a 15-5 win. Tori Hatfield, Hannah Melton and Fletcher had RBIs in the bottom of the fourth.

Much like the first game, Selma took an early lead in the second contest. The Saints led 5-0, only to watch Dallas County storm back for the win.

“We got down early in the contest, and it was good for us to see our girls get down and be able to come back,” Moore said. “It’s easy for kids to play as long as they have got a lead, but for us to be able to come back it gives us some confidence going forward.”

In game two, Selma’s Alisha Thomas’ singled to score Kayla Page to start the inning. Irishia Moore’s single, which scored Jakayla Thrash, kept the momentum going. A double by Whitlock pushed two more runs across to make the score 4-0. Selma tacked on one more before the inning ended to make the lead 5-0.

Dallas County came roaring back with five runs of its own. McIlwain, who got the win in game one, and Yasmeen Green, Alexis Walker and Fletcher walked and scored on passed balls to tie the game at 5-5.

The Hornets added three more in the second to take an 8-5 lead and kept the momentum going with eight additional runs in the third.

Many of the runs were scored on wild pitches or passed balls, but the Hornets bats played a part as well.

Donna Neeley Gill and Moore had singles that scored runs in the inning.

Meanwhile, Selma’s bats weren’t doing much damage at all. The Saints went down in order in the second and third inning.

Selma head coach Jameriah Johnson said errors ended up proving too costly for her team.

“Errors and I think due to the rain, the pitcher’s mindset — I guess she kind of lost focus and it was hard for her to jump back,” Johnson said. “A lot of the runs that came in were at the plate, so if we can stop those we should be OK.”

Dallas County will play at Demopolis in the class 5A, area 6 tournament Thursday at 9 a.m. Selma will play at Hillcrest at 4 p.m. in the class 6A, area 6 tournament.
