Dallas County may use a coach by committee approach Thursday for its 5A state semifinal game against Ramsay.

Hornets’ head coach Willie Moore is still feeling under the weather and has not made the trip to Birmingham yet.

“We don’t know the status of coach Moore yet,” assistant coach Marty Smith said. “We are still hoping the medicine kicks in even more. We are prepared to play this ballgame if coach Moore is there tomorrow, and we are prepared to play this game if coach Moore is not there tomorrow.”

Smith said if Moore isn’t well enough to coach the team Thursday, the team will use a coach by committee approach. Charles Thompson, Kenny Allen and Cliff Nix are the other assistant coaches for the Hornets.

“We’re just going to continue to follow his lead whether he’s there or whether he’s not,” Smith said of Moore. “This is his program.”

Smith would presumably lead the coach by committee. He won two state championships when at John Carroll Catholic.

“The community of Dallas County High School should be very proud of how this basketball team has resprented our community and how they’ve handled adversity in everything they’ve done,” Smith said. “It has been amazing.”

The defending 4A state champions will play at the Bill Harris Arena at the CrossPlex Thursday at 4:30 p.m. They spent a majority of Wednesday at Crosspoint Baptist Church in Birmingham, where Smith attends church.

Crosspoint gave the team snacks, let them practice on their two 94-foot basketball courts and had four-wheel drive vehicles available in case the rainy weather did turn into snow.
