Roundup: DCHS beats Wilcox, stays unbeaten

In a battle of Final 48 teams from last season, Dallas County had its hands full Friday night at Wilcox Central.

The Hornets (4-0), who trailed most of the first half, rallied to escape with a 55-49 victory and its undefeated record intact. Wilcox Central was the last team to defeat the Hornets, Dec. 21, 2013 in the county tournament at Wallace Community College Selma.

The Hornets made sure it didn’t happen again Tuesday.

Jerrod Moorer scored 17 points and Raheem Phillips added 15 to lead the Hornets. Javaris McGuire added 10.

The Dallas County Lady Hornets lost to Wilcox Central, although the score was not available at press time.

Dallas County’s next games will be at Marengo County Thursday.

 

Selma 62, County County 46 (Boys)

Selma continued its hot start with a dominating win over Chilton County.

The Saints (8-1) rolled to 2-0 in area play with its second win over Chilton in a week. Quentavious Davis and Dexter Hatcher scored 15 points to lead the way for Selma. Michael Griffin had eight points and eight rebounds for the Saints.

Eleven different players scored for Selma. The Saints led 31-14 at halftime.

Selma will host Wilcox Central Friday.

 

Selma 44, Chilton County 11 (Girls)

Selma’s Lady Saints dominated Chilton County 44-11 Tuesday to move to 2-0 in area play.

Selma (7-4) was led by Jamya Smith with nine points. Ayanna Robinson and Charmekia Moore added eight for the Saints.

 

Central Hayneville76, Southside 71 (Boys)

Southside fell to Central Hayneville 76-71 in a close game Tuesday night.

The Panthers were led by Scott Cole’s 16 points. Charles Price added 15 and Jhlandius Sullivan also had 12 for the Panthers.

Southside’s next game will be Friday against Keith.

 

Central Hayneville 41, Southside 37 (Girls)

Calvondrea Blackmon scored 19 points for Southside Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough in a 41-37 loss to Central Hayneville.Southside led 17-13 at halftime and 28-26 after three quarters before losing the lead.

 

Keith 74, Ellwood Christian 41 (Boys)

Keith’s John Pettway scored 24 points to lead the Bears to a 74-41 victory Tuesday over Ellwood Christian.

Pettway also totaled six rebounds, five steals and three assists. Jaequan Simmons had 17 points for Keith and Kent James had eight points, ten rebounds and three blocks.

The Bears led 40-18 at halftime and 55-34 going into the fourth quarter.

Keith (5-4) will play at Southside Friday.

Keith 98, Ellwood Christian 5 (Girls)

Shatavia Moore scored 30 points and Ambreya Snow added 26 more as Keith’s Lady Bears blew out rival Ellwood Christian 98-5 Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (5-3) will play at Southside Friday.

 

Selma 81, AUM 79

(Men’s basketball)

Selma University’s Kawitise Calhoun hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to lead the Bulldogs men’s basketball team to a 81-79 victory Monday over Auburn University at Montgomery.

The win was Selma University’s (1-8) first of the season.

Calhoun scored 12 points for Selma. Adrian Nelson led the Bulldogs with 16 points in the win.
