The Concordia College Alabama men’s basketball team blew out Wallace Community College Selma 87-60 Saturday afternoon, behind 17 points from Jeremy Sturdivant and Tavin Cummings.

The Hornets led 49-26 at halftime and led at one point by 35 points before coasting to a 27-point win.

“We had little mental mistakes down the stretch but overall I’m happy with the win,” Concordia head coach Fredrick Summers said.

Summers was happy with the way his team overcame a slow start that saw Wallace lead until midway through the first half.

“We came out and executed defensively,” Summers said.

“We got off to a little slow start but after a couple of minutes of getting lose we executed our defensive plan.”

After trailing the Patriots 12-11, Concordia went on a 34-12 run to close the half.

“I hope it is going to make us better down the road,” Wallace head coach Foster Davis said. “They are a four-year college and we are a junior college, but that’s no excuse. We beat them twice last year but they are a much improved team this year.”

Kerry Mitchell led the Patriots with 17 points in the game.

Concordia 74, Wallace 50

The Concordia College Alabama women used a late 29-9 run to put away Wallace Community College Selma 74-50.

The Hornets led 51-45 with just under eight minutes to play, but Tykeria Johnson made shot after shot down the stretch and the Concordia defense held Wallace to only one field goal the rest of the way.

“We are a resilient group,” Concordia head coach Eric Jackson said. “Every day at practice they go hard and they are learning how to gel.”

Johnson scored 27 points and teammate La’Shay Lettingham scored 28 points to lead Concordia to its fourth win of the season.

“We need to do the little things better, like make our layups, cut down on turnovers and make free throws,” Wallace head coach April Harper said.

Jameneshia Caver scored 14 points to lead the Patriots. Valencia McCain, Kenya Russell and De’Undria Boggs all scored 8 points each.
