Cornerstone Realty has kicked off its first coat and blanket drive in the midst of the winter months approaching, providing garments to residents of Selma.

The garments can be any size from small, medium, large and so forth because people in need are all sizes in Selma, according to Sandra Mitchell, who is a sales associate agent for Cornerstone Realty.

“We are just trying to help people out because cold weather is coming and times have been tough,” Mitchell said. “We just want to help people that are less fortunate than we are.”

Mitchell said residents can donate any type of blankets as well, no matter if they are throws, bed blankets or even quilts.

“Any kind, just something that someone can stay warm in,” Mitchell said.

The drop off location for the blankets and coats will remain at Cornerstone Realty, 519 Lauderdale Street in Selma and items can be donated from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the last day in November, which is Nov. 30.

“Now, if someone doesn’t have any coats or blankets available to donate, and would like to donate some money instead to help, that’s fine too,” Mitchell said. “I can go buy the coat or coats for the needy and put it with the others.”

Mitchell said sometimes people don’t have the time to get garments together to donate and said it can make it easier for them to just pick someone else to do the work for them.

Alongside Mitchell’s effort to lend a helping hand within the current drive, she also spoke about how the real estate agency’s recent community event was their first and that it led them to giving over 5000 meals away last month to those who were in need of food.

“That was just in one day,” Mitchell said. “But, we’re trying, it may not be every month but we are trying to do something for the community every month or every other month if we can get it to go that way.”

“I think as far as the people who need it, they will be so excited,” Mitchell said. “So far, we have gotten a lot of blankets and everything and I just think when you know someone cares and you’re in need, it picks you up at least some. You know somebody cares and you are not forgotten.”

Mitchell said on the day of Nov. 30, all blankets and coats given to Cornerstone Realty will be given to the Edmundite Missions “Boutique and more” shop on Minter in Selma for those in need during the holidays and the upcoming winter months.
