Morgan still in running for state tennis championship

Rain continues to test the patience of some of the state’s best tennis players at the Alabama Independent School Association championships at Lagoon Park in Montgomery.

After all of the matches were postponed Monday, a lot of progress was made Tuesday before weather impacted the area again. However, even the rain couldn’t put a damper on Morgan Academy’s hopes of winning a boys state championship, as the Senators’ Will Sherrer, Elliott Oslund and Willis Watt Jones all reached singles play championships.

“Being from a small town, the effort they’ve put forth really makes me proud,” said Morgan Academy tennis coach Baxter Stinson.

Sherrer is in the No. 2, Oslund is in the No. 3 and Jones is in the No. 4 singles championships. All three will take on players from Tuscaloosa Academy when the championship resumes April 22 at Lagoon Park. Tuscaloosa was the only team to defeat the Senators’ boys in team competition during the regular season.

Mary Ashlyn Pearce, Morgan’s No. 5 girl, will play an opponent from Glenwood in a final as well.

The Senators also have hopes of winning doubles championships. Although doubles play is in its early stages due to rain, the Senators still have all four teams — two girls, two boys — alive.

After a rain-free morning, play was called Tuesday afternoon when storms reached the Montgomery area. The original plan was to crown state champions Tuesday, but weather made that unrealistic. Stinson said organizers feared of more rain and also knew the AISA state track championships were set to start in Selma Wednesday, so they postponed the resumption of play until the following week.
