The Morgan Academy Senators were prepared to play their one allowed AISA scrimmage at home last Thursday, before showers washed out the area and made the field unplayable.

The game was rescheduled for Friday night at Bessemer Academy. Although the Senators weren’t as crisp as head coach Bob Taylor hoped from the opening snap, the team improved as the night progressed.

“We’ve got a lot of things to improve on, to get better on,” Taylor said. “As the day went on, we got better. We started kind of slow and it got better as the day went along.”

Taylor said there are two major points of emphasis moving forward for the Senators.

“The biggest thing with us, our tempo on offense and our tackling on defense. Those are two things that I was not pleased with, our tempo offensively and how we tackled,” Taylor said. “Those are things that we do every day. That’s stuff we have to improve on and get better at.”

One nice thing about the scrimmage was Morgan got plenty of work on both sides of the ball.

“We got close to about 150 snaps between the two of us,” Taylor said. “It was good for us to see somebody different, running a little something different than what we are used to seeing.”

Morgan Academy’s jamboree is Friday at Macon East and the Senators will also play Wilcox Academy. Taylor said the Senators will take one day to get ready for Macon East and another to get prepared for Wilcox, which makes this week a lot like a regular game week.

“It is creating an opportunity for the kids to get used to a game week practice,” Taylor said. “We have been going three hours a day since Aug. 1. It is starting to wear on everybody. Everybody is ready to get to a little bit of a routine.”

The varsity and junior varsity squads will alternate quarters at the jamboree Friday night, where Taylor hopes his team takes the next step in improving with the regular season just over a week away.
