Offseason program getting Senators ready for spring practices

Spring practices are still a month away, but the Morgan Academy Senators are still getting workouts in to prepare for a return to the field.

While many Morgan players are currently participating in other sports such as soccer, baseball, tennis, track and field, and golf, Morgan head football coach Bob Taylor said players have still been able to get their workouts in.

“Basically, we’ve got a lot of kids that are involved in other sports right now, so we’re in a process where they’re trying to get their workouts in when they can get them in,” Taylor said. “And everybody else involved are getting their workouts in, and we’re just trying to work around that. We have to just try to work with everybody and try to make sure we get a good workout in when we have them, which is two or three days a week, and just try to work as much as we can when we have the opportunity.”

Taylor said the Morgan strength and conditioning program is adaptive to what sport is currently in season, and it’s not just about building stronger football players, but about building stronger athletes.

“What we’ll do is take a lot of our strength program and our agility program and use it with our other sports because we have kids that play multiple sports,” Taylor said. “The winter kind of carried over for what we needed to happen with basketball going on. Our biggest thing is that we want to make sure our kids work hard so it’ll carry over into the spring and our summer schedule.”

Taylor said the Senators are set to start practices at the end of April, and all players should be finished up with other sports.

“We’re looking to start the spring somewhere around April 29, and everybody should be through except maybe our golfers,” Taylor said. “We’re just trying to work around everyone’s schedules. We had a really good winter workout program and a lot of it has carried over. We’re a lot stronger than we were.”

Morgan will practice in the spring for a few weeks before ending with a scrimmage.

“We’re going to go four days a week the first week, four days the next week, and then the next will be five days,” Taylor said. “Then we’ll end up with a scrimmage with Wilcox and Fort Dale.”
