After another winning season, the Concordia College Alabama Hornets football team is pulling in the honors.

Don Lee, head football coach of Concordia College Alabama, was recently named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year after the Hornets’ 6-3 finish.

Along with Lee, senior free safety Stephan McCord, senior linebackers Javonne Roman and Demarcus Heath, sophomore defensive back Shawn Sweet and Demarcus Savage were all selected to play in the USA Football Holiday Bowl in Virginia Beach, Va., which includes the top players from the NCCAA, NAIA, USCAA and Independents.

The game will take place on Dec. 17 with kickoff at 1:15 p.m.

Lee, who took over as head football coach earlier this season after the departure of coach Shepherd Skanes, said it’s a great honor to receive the award of coach of the year, as well as be the leader of the Hornets.

“It’s definitely an honor. Coming in after the third ball game and taking over a team that was kind of in disarray — they didn’t know which way to go losing their head coach — so it was an honor to kind of be able to pull them together and finish up the season and get them to play to their top abilities,” Lee said.

Lee added it says a lot about the program and the character of the players who were selected to play in the Holiday Bowl.

“It says a lot about those players showing that they have a lot of character and integrity,” Lee said. “They can fight through anything.”
