To the editor:

The summer vacation is coming to an end. The School of Discovery Genesis Center will begin the 2010-2011 academic year on Monday, August 9, 2010. The school wide goals for this year are to continue to train pupils with the fundamental skills, and for students to score above the annual measurable objectives in percentage of proficient students on both the reading (89 percent) and mathematics (74 percent) components of the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test (ARMT).

Excellence is the norm at the School of Discovery. Many of the school’s education professors have attended summer workshops/conferences to improve their knowledge and skills. Ultimately, students are the beneficiaries of educators who continuously engage themselves in professional growth.

The Selma City Board of Education has assembled a “think tank” group of professionals to guide pupil instruction and provide support services at the School of Discovery Genesis Center for the 2010-2011 school year. The faculty and staff members are Andrea Jean Gilmore Curtis, Rebecca Nichols, Barbara Jean Robinson, Demisha Stough, Lisa Baker, Ann S. Thomas, James Allen Bearden, Joy Hobson, Ivery Williams, Derrick Mitchell, Phyllis Parks, Beth Watters, Jacqueline Walker, Becky Blaylock, Brenda Jefferson, Erika Smitherman, Lillie Gray Watkins Terry, Kimberly Stewart, John Henry Hunter, Mary Helen Jackson (Jackie) Stokes, Cynthia Burnett, Geneva Moore, Wanda Harris-Martin, Jacqueline Lucy, Chandra Toney, Quenisha Jackson, Kesia Smith, Lawrence Wilmer, and Tihonia Hinton.

We envision a great school year with many successes. A good beginning is indicative of a successful school year.
