Mistakes hurt the Dallas County High School Lady Hornets all day, as they were swept in a doubleheader against Maplesville High School at home on Tuesday.

It was senior day for the Lady Hornets’ lone senior, pitcher Whitney Denson, as she leaves the school as its all-time wins leader, while also finishing with a batting average over .400.

The Lady Hornets lost game one 9-7, and Robert Watson, head softball coach of Dallas County (15-19-1), said they fought hard, but made too many mistakes.

“We had battled back to 7-7. Going into the sixth inning we both had our tops of the lineup going to bat and theirs produced and ours didn’t,” Watson said. “All day we made little mistakes that kept piling up and building up, and it became too much to overcome.”

Trailing 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Dallas County got a spark when Denson hit a shot to left center field, driving in teammates Alexis Thomas and Brittney White and doubling in the process to make it a 7-6 game.

The Lady Hornets tied the game in the same inning when Amy Persinger singled and scored Mar’Quesha Hardy from second base, but Maplesville added two runs in the top of the sixth to take the win.

The Lady Hornets had 13 hits in game one, while Denson gave up five hits, and struck out five batters in six innings in her final home game at Dallas County.

The Lady Hornets were hurt by eight errors in the first game.

Dallas County lost the second game 7-4, as Denson hit the first home run of her career over the center field wall and also had a double.

Katie White, Hollis Ellis and Persinger each had a single, while Alexis Gunn had two singles.

They Lady Hornets will play again Wednesday at 4 p.m. on the road against Thorsby.

After that, they’ll set their sights on the Class 4A Area 6 tournament, which starts May 2 at Bibb County High School in Centerville.

Watson said Dallas County has to fix the mistakes moving forward.

“We face a great challenge tomorrow (against Thorsby) as well,” Watson said. “I think Maplesville really pushed our kids to the limit and we made too many mistakes. We’ve still got to clean up certain areas, and if we do that we’ll have a chance in the area tournament, but right now we’re just making too many mental mistakes.”
