The Selma City Council discussed its plans for FY 2023 City budget and announced a schedule.

At Tuesday’s Selma City Council meeting on Tuesday, they reacted to Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr.’s budget proposal. Perkins sent the council a budget last week.

Selma City Council President Billy Young reminded everyone who handles the city budget.

“Under Alabama Law, the City Council is responsible for finances in the City of Selma,” Young said. “The council does its job. The City Budget isn’t a day to day operation.”

Selma Councilman Troy Harvill, who heads the council’s Finance Committee, wanted to clear something up. “When we requested an Excel sheet for the budget, we were not suggesting that Mayor send his budget on a Excel sheet,” Harvill said. “The Mayor can send the budget however he wants. We want a working document.”

Young expressed the importance of department heads attending the budget hearings. They can’t attend council meetings per instructed by Perkins. Councilman Michael Johnson assured him they will attend.

The city council announced its schedule for budget hearings, which will start next month at Council Chambers at 6 p.m.
