John Doston Coon, Jr. (74) passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021 following a short illness. He was born in Selma on March 4, 1947. John is survived by his sister, Eleanor Coon Nichols of Selma and step-brother William Richard Dailey of Fishers, Indiana. He is also survived by niece, Rebecca Dailey Crull (Shawn) of New Palestine, Indiana; nephews, Ben Nichols (Sydney) of Auburn, Jeff Nichols (Sherrie) of Alabaster, Pat Nichols (Brooke) of Springville; great nieces Hope Nichols and Haley Nichols; great nephews John Allen Nichols (Lucy), Doston Nichols, Clayton Nichols, Brannon Crull, and Alex Crull. John was preceded in death by his father, John Doston Coon, Sr., mother Ethel Mae Coon, and step-mother, Frances Coon.

John graduated from Albert G. Parrish High School in 1965, Livingston University in 1969, and Webster University in 1974. Following graduation from Livingston, he entered the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1993 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. While in the Air Force, John served in Iceland, South Korea and numerous bases in the continental United States. John worked for the City of Selma Cemetery Department for 10 years, retiring in 2021 as the Cemetery Superintendent.  One of John’s passions was supporting our veterans through his active membership in the American Legion Post 20 for the last decade, most recently serving as Adjutant. John grew up as a member of Central Baptist Church where he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. Most recently he was an active member of Elkdale Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2021 at Elkdale Baptist Church with a visitation beginning at 2 p.m. A private burial is scheduled at a later date. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, contributions to Elkdale Baptist Church in John’s memory.
