Members of the Delta Academy, a youth initiative of the Selma Delta Sigma Theta alumnae chapter, recently attended a GEMS (Girls Enjoying Math and Science) Conference at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.

Delta Academy is made up of girls ages 11-14 in grades fifth through eighth.  The program focuses on scholarship, sisterhood, and services and involves the girls attending monthly sessions and other events to broaden their academic and cultural horizons.

The recent trip to the University of South Alabama encouraged the girls to study STEM subjects and made them aware of possible careers in math, science, and technology.

The conference included hands-on workshops and culminated in an aircraft display.

The trip to Mobile is an annual part of Delta Academy. Other STEM events are planned for Delta Academy members throughout the year.

The local chapter also biannually sponsors a STEM workshop for girls in Dallas, Lowndes and Perry County.

The Delta Academy committee was recognized nationally for their work at Delta Sigma Theta 53rd National Convention and received a first-placee award for its STEM program.
