Newton Erwin Allen Jr.

Newton Erwin Allen Jr. died July 7, 2017, after a battle with cancer of more than six years. He was born Jan. 9, 1939, in Selma. He attended The University of Alabama and graduated from Livingston State College.

For 32 years he was a teacher of social studies (“joggerfee”) and coach of football, golf and swimming. His other love was sailing —  whether teaching others how to or cruising on his own boat to the Keys and the Bahamas.

He was a past commodore of St. Andrews Bay Yacht Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Newton E. Allen and Fannie Hardy Allen; and his son, Kenneth Erwin Allen.

Newt is survived by his wife, Alice; brothers, Walter (Diane) Allen and Jere (Joe Ann) Allen; and his children, Rives Allen, Creed (Karen) Allen, Margaret (David) Peeples, Elizabeth Smith, Scott (Ashley) Freeman and John Robert (Chandra) Kingston; 13 grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends.

The funeral service will be held at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Panama City on Monday, July 10, 2017, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the family plot at New Live Oak Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 14.
