Look at Melton, Bowie as role models

A remarkable event occurred Oct. 4 with the election of Darrio Melton as mayor and Corey Bowie as president of the Selma City Council. Both of these young men grew up in GWC Homes.
Though they were raised in GWC Homes and grew up, I assume, without a great deal of wealth or privilege, they have attained the highest political offices in the city of Selma.
Our society is burdened by bad ideas which excuse individuals from being responsible for their behavior.
But I want to encourage all people, especially young men in our community, to look not at the haters and dividers, but to look at Mayor-elect Melton and President Bowie as examples to be followed.
For many years I have watched these young men grow into men to be emulated. How did they emerge from meager circumstances to become great achievers?
I attribute their success to faith in God, commitment to his church, getting an education and a loving and supportive family.
I believe that any young man who will follow the example set by these two young men, Melton and Bowie, can become a success in any field of endeavor he chooses.
Every person is responsible for his own behavior, whether it is criminal or productive.
Having known Darrio Melton and Corey Bowie for many years and having admired their accomplishments as young men, I am proud of both of these men, urged all young men in our community to follow their example and wish them the best as they lead our city into a hopeful and productive future.
May God continue to bless them both and may he bless our city!
