Ellwood Christian Academy’s football game Friday night against Highland Home did not go as the Eagles hoped. Highland Home dominated throughout and beat the Eagles 57-12 at Memorial Stadium.
Ellwood started the game by kicking the ball off to Highland Home’s Cammeron Felder, who had a huge return of 55 yards and was brought down by Ellwood’s Taylor Ellis. The Flying Squadrons found themselves starting the game in good field position and drove the ball down field to the 10 yard line, but Ellwood’s defense forced Highland Home to turn the ball over on downs. Highland Home’s Johnathan Gafford recorded a safety on Ellwood’s first drive to give the Flying Squadron a 2-0 lead. After the safety punt, Highland scored again on a 10-yard pass to take an 8-0 lead.
Ellwood’s next drive resulted in a punt and Felder made the Eagles pay. He returned the punt for a 35-yard touchdown to give Highland a 16-0 lead. Ellwood answered with a 50-yard touchdown run by quarterback Adarricus Tate to pull within 16-6 at halftime.
Any thoughts of an Ellwood comeback were quickly put to rest. Highland Home’s Dreke Bell returned a fumble for a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the second half and the Flying Squadron rolled from there.
Emmanuel Banks scored Ellwood’s final touchdown of the final on a 30-yard run.
