Morgan Academy’s tennis and track and field teams will both be back in action Monday.
The Morgan Senators tennis team will be at home against the Tuscaloosa Academy Knights Monday at 1 p.m. at the city tennis courts and the Morgan track and field team will host its second track meet of the season Monday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
The tennis team is gearing up for its most difficult match of the season against a team that beat Morgan in the state championship last year. Although this match is clearly the one players have circled on their calendar each year, Morgan head coach Baxter Stinson said the preparation for Monday’s match hasn’t changed.
“We don’t train any differently for one opponent over another,” Stinson said. “Ultimately, we’re looking toward the state tournament.”
While Morgan will have some new faces on its team from the last time the Senators met up with Tuscaloosa, the Knights will look very familiar to what they’ve looked like the past four years.
Stinson said many of the talented tennis players on Tuscaloosa who were in eighth grade four years ago are now seniors. With plenty of experience on the defending state champion’s lineup, Stinson knows his team will need its best effort to beat the Knights.
“They know from the beginning that Tuscaloosa is the team with the target on their back,” Stinson said.
The Morgan girls’ track team will also look to build on its solid performance from March. At the last track meet, the girls won five total events, including the 4×800 relay. Robinson is hoping for a better all-around performance from his girls and boys team at the upcoming meet.
“I think we need to improve in everything else,” said Morgan track coach Rob Robinson.
The boys team didn’t win any events at the last meet, but Sam Brackin was second in the long jump.
“He’s our fastest guy,” Robinson said. “He also is getting a lot better in the long jump.”
Robinson said he expects a few more teams to be in attendance at Monday’s track meet including Tuscaloosa, who Robinson said boasts a strong girls team.
