The Morgan Academy golf team has only finished three golf tournaments this season, but in each of the three tournaments, Morgan has placed in the top three.

Due to bad weather and spring break, the Senators haven’t competed as much as they’d have like to at this point in the season. Even in the few matches they’ve completed the 10 golfers on the team have shown improvement.

“They’re growing,” said Morgan head coach Ira Wagoner. “They’re getting some confidence and the better they play, the more confidence they get.”

In the first match of the season at the Troy Country Club on Feb. 22, the Senators placed third. A few weeks later, at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Morgan came in second overall. On March 14, the Senators won a tournament at the Vanity Fair Golf Course in Monroeville.

Three golfers — Harrison Adams, Haysten Levins and Will Alison — have already qualified for the state tournament by shooting under a 90. Wagoner is hoping more of his golfers will qualify for the state tournament on April 25 before the season is over.

The state championship will be held at Cambrian Ridge in Greenville. The Morgan Academy golf team competed at that course on March 17, and Wagoner said he wants to visit the course again before the state championship.

The Senators had two matches scheduled this week that they canceled because of spring break. Morgan did not attend the match last Monday at the Riverside Country Club in Lannett, and the Senators will not attend the match at the Indian Hills Country Club in Tuscaloosa Monday because it will be Morgan’s first day back from spring break.

The week of April 5 will be a busy time for the Senators golf team. They will travel to the Greenville Country Club for a match hosted by Fort Dale Academy, and on April 7, Morgan will host a tournament at the Selma Country Club.

“That’s usually the biggest tournament of the year is when people come to Selma,” Wagoner said.

Wagoner said he is not sure if the team’s top golfer, Jones Free, will be back from competing in Augusta, Georgia before the April 5 match at Greenville.

Nonetheless, Wagoner expects to have Free back for the remainder of the season, where he is a positive motivator for the other golfers on the team.

“He’s got a good work ethic and he tries his best and everybody sees that,” Wagoner said.

For now, Wagoner is hoping his golfers are spending their spring break on a golf course, but he’s not getting his hopes up too high.

“Hopefully wherever they are this week, they’re practicing, but I kind of doubt that,” Wagoner said.
