Through this year’s Deal Days fundraisers, auto dealers in Selma and Dallas County were able to award thousands of dollars to the United Way of Selma and Dallas County.

Each November, car dealerships in Selma and Dallas County donate $30 to the United Way for each vehicle they sell. This year the fundraiser earned roughly $3,000, according to Jeff Cothran, the executive director of the United Way of Selma and Dallas County.

“These car dealers are local business people just like everybody else here trying to eek out a living in Selma,” Cothran said. “They are a part of this community… and this is their way of giving back.”

The participating dealerships in this year’s Deal Days were Moore Stewart Ford, Moore Stewart Honda, Turner Motor Company, Reliable Cadillac GMC and Steve Lane Autos.

“The Selma community has been absolutely wonderful to us at Turner Chevrolet and this is just a way for us to give back,” said Milam Turner, owner of Turner Chevrolet.

“We are in the advent season right now, the season of giving, and this is just a chance for us to reinvest in our community and let people know how much we appreciate what they do.”

When money is donated to the United Way, it benefits 15 different organizations — the American Red Cross, Selma-Dallas County YMCA, SABRA Sanctuary, Salvation Army, Bosco Nutrition Center, Special Years Plus, Special Pre-School Program, Cahaba Center Easter Seal, Selma AIR, Literacy Outreach Program, Selma Area Food Bank, Tukabatchee Council of the Boy Scouts, South Central Council of the Girl Scouts and the Central Alabama Regional Child Advocacy Center.

The United Way also provides HealthLink, a prescription drug assistance program, Doc In A Bus, a medical clinic for the uninsured, and a diabetic monitoring program.

“These [United Way dollars] give people safe places to go. It gives people food to eat. It puts bread on the table for those who are hungry and so many things that happen everyday that are acts of human kindness are being done by these agencies of the United Way,” Cothran said.
