CCA chases first win of season vs. Ave Maria

Still looking for their first win of the year, the Concordia College Alabama Hornets (0-5) will travel to Naples, Florida Saturday to take on Ave Maria University (2-2).

Concordia has played in close games this year. The Hornets led Stillman College by double digits in the fourth quarter and had a halftime lead against Lane College, but both of those leads fell apart in the second half.

“We are just trying to put it together, trying to put two halves together,” said Concordia College Alabama head coach Stanley Conner. “I think this half of the season, going into the second half of our season, I’ll be real disappointed if we don’t win more than we lose.”

The Hornets face an Ave Maria team Saturday that has won its last two games. The Gyrenes defeated Lagrange College and Warner University the last two weeks.

“They are real sound in what they do,” Conner said. “Most of the time the team that makes the least amount of mistakes comes out ahead, so I can see why they’ve won their last two ball games.”

Concordia quarterback Jarvis Chambers played last week in the Hornets’ 40-7 loss to NCAA FCS member Alcorn State, but is unlikely to take the field against Ave Marie. Chambers went 7-for-12 for 76 yards and a touchdown last week, but is still battling the effects of a nagging hamstring injury.

“We let him come in and throw the ball, trying not to let him run, but we’ve got to have that guy that can do both, and I don’t want to hurt him or get him banged up anymore since we have a bye week coming,” Conner said. “Hopefully, after the bye week, he will be completely healthy.”

William Jordan was the only other Hornets’ quarterback that saw action. Jordan was 2-for-6 passing for 61 yards and was sacked four times.
