The Concordia College Alabama men’s basketball program made school history Tuesday night, as the Hornets defeated a Division I program for the first time.

The Hornets (5-7) stunned Alcorn State (1-11) on the road by making 16 of 21 free throws — many of them coming when they mattered most.

“It is huge and it is a confidence booster for the guys,” CCA coach Fredrick Summers said. “Once again it shows what we have been telling our recruits all along — that we are a program that is moving forward.”

Ken Atwood led the Hornets with 21 points. Dennis Miles added 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks. CCA held Alcorn to 4-for-20 shooting from the three-point line.

“We’ve got to be a team that plays within ourselves,” Summers said. “Our style of play has changed. We are a totally different ballclub and they are starting to realize now that we can’t play the way we played last year.”

The Hornets are slowing the pace much more than last season when they raced up and down the floor and dared opponents to keep up. The formula is working.

The win greatly improves CCA’s overall profile, which will come in handy when the United States Collegiate Athletic Association announces its tournament field later this year.

Marquis Vance led Alcorn State in scoring with 24 points.

Morgan Academy 26 (Boys)

For the second straight day, Morgan Academy found itself on the wrong end of a lopsided score at the Glenwood Tournament.

The Senators (6-6) fell to Grace Christian out of Bainbridge, Ga. 55-26 Tuesday for their second loss in as many days.

Grace led 19-14 at halftime but outscored the Senators 36-12 in the second half to pull away. John Ross Bone led Morgan with 14 points. Grace had three players in double figures, including Sam McRae with 17.

The tournament matched Alabama and Mississippi teams up in every game.
