A 52-year-old Selma man died Friday after he was struck by a freight train, according to the Selma Police Department.
Officers received a call about the accident around 9:45 a.m. The preliminary investigation lead officials to believe that an eastbound train struck a pedestrian near Marie Foster Street and J.L. Chestnut Jr. Boulevard. The man was identified as Anthony Cornelius Mitchell by District Attorney Michael Jackson.
The man was walking westbound on the railroad tracks at the time of the accident, authorities said.
“For some unknown reason, the pedestrian didn’t move for the train, which was traveling on the same tracks he was walking on,” said Lt. Johnny King, with the Selma Police Department. “The pedestrian sustained major injuries.”
The male was transported to the Vaughan Regional Medical Center’s emergency room in an ambulance and died at the hospital, King said.
No one else was injured, according to officers.
Norfolk Southern owns the train that struck Mitchell, according to Jackson.
There is no suspected foul play at this time. King said the accident is still being investigated by Sgt. R. Nix, the supervisor of the Selma Police Department’s traffic division.
