Charles Stephen “Steve” Davis

Charles Stephen Davis (Steve) of Montgomery, Alabama passed away suddenly on September 26, 2014. Mr. Davis was born in Alexander City, Alabama on August 2, 1949, and graduated from Benjamin Russell High School in 1967, where he was elected most valuable player on the football team and was a member of the state championship wrestling team. Mr. Davis attended the University of Alabama where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was an ardent fan of the Crimson Tide. He received his bachelor’s degree from Auburn University at Montgomery and his Master degrees in adult education and counseling from Troy State University. He was a Certified Addictions Counselor and Licensed Professional Counselor, and until his retirement in 2007, Mr. Davis spent his professional career supporting countless people struggling with drug and alcohol recovery. After his retirement, Mr. Davis built a volunteer career in serving others, both in children’s mental health and addictions counseling. He was given the Alabama Family Ties’ Embrace Family Award for his tireless work in children’s mental health. Mr. Davis was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where he served many years as a choir member. Mr. Davis served in the Kairos Ministry, and at the time of his death, he was in his fourth and final year of the Wednesday Morning Education for the Ministry Class at his Church.
Mr. Davis was predeceased by his parents, Charles Wayne Davis and Mary Jane “Judy” Landrum Davis of Alexander City, Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rosa Hamlett Davis; two daughters, Gunter Davis Owens (Rhett) of Birmingham and Eola Mary Darrington Davis of Montgomery; one grandchild, Helen Benedict Owens; four brothers, Mike Davis (India), Tim Davis (Donna), and Tommy Davis of Alexander City, and John Davis (Tamara) of Birmingham; three nieces, Lynley Davis Hines (Robin) of Kansas, and Katheryn Davis and Lindsay Davis of Birmingham; and one nephew, Sawyer Davis (Jonna) of Alexander City. Serving as pall bearers are Rhett Owens, Sawyer Davis, Bobby Kelly, Peter Landrum, Steve Logan, and Web Cowden. Honorary pall bearers are the Tuesday Night Group (Joe Haley, Randy Hall, John Gayle, Gene Brown, and Jim Marshall). Visitation will be at Southern Memorial Funeral Home, 3154 Highland Avenue, on Monday, September 29, 2014, from 5 to 7 PM. The funeral will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 113 Madison Avenue, on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, at 10 AM. Burial to follow the service at New Live Oaks Cemetery in Selma at 11:30 AM. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church.
