Senators’ hope to continue hot streak as postseason starts

Morgan Academy’s softball team will enter Thursday’s Class AAA, Region 2 tournament without a loss in over a month of play, thanks to strong pitching from Margaret Mims and a consistent lineup.
The Lady Senators have not lost a non-tournament, regular season game since their opener against Tuscaloosa Academy to begin the season.
All of the other six losses Morgan suffered came in tournament play, where time is often limited to keep everything running on schedule.
“Margaret Mims, except for two games where we made a lot of errors, she has not given up over two or three runs a game and our hitting has been really, really good,” Morgan Academy head coach Ed Miller said.
Miller said at the beginning of the year, his team had only three starters back, so he had to shuffle everyone’s positions until he found what worked best for the Senators.
The tinkering must have worked, because Morgan has not lost a game since March 21 in the Monroe Tournament. Entering this weekend’s tournament as the top seed and host, Miller said he’s using it as a final chance to evaluate his team going into next week’s state tournament at Lagoon Park in Montgomery May 2-3.
“We are going to go out there and just play,” Miller said.
“I told them not to worry as much about the regional tournament. If you win this and lose two next week, you haven’t done anything.”
Miller said no matter what happens Thursday, he likes his team’s chances of winning a state title.
“We feel like we have a chance to win the state, because if you are there you always have a chance,” Miller said.
The Senators will play Thursday against Bessemer Academy at 12 p.m. on one field while Monroe Academy and Tuscaloosa Academy play on another field at the Sportsplex. The winners will meet at 2 p.m. for the championship and the losers will play at the same time for the No. 3 seed in next week’s state tournament.
