Dear editor,

I wholly support James G. Smith’s article for the naming of the new bridge nearing completion on Dallas Avenue over Valley Creek in honor of Selma’s only Medal of Honor recipient, Howard Walter Gilmore.

There are numerous reasons that could be given, but the fact Selma’s chief publicity draw is its history and this would an important contribution, not only for Selma but for recognizing the men and women through the ages who fought and defended the rights and liberties we enjoy and hold so dear.

I urge State Sen. Hank Sanders and State Rep. Darrio Melton to proceed with whatever is necessary in the Legislature  for this designation to be accomplished.
