While enjoying the riverfront, residents will have the opportunity to listen to jazz music and eat cuisine from local vendors as the city prepares to host its 2nd annual Jazz on the Grass event set for Friday, June 21.
Held at Phoenix Park across from the historic St. James Hotel, Jazz on the Grass will begin at noon and conclude at 10 p.m. With a jazz concert beginning at 5 p.m., the event will host a slew of other activities that will cater to residents of all ages.
Councilwoman Angela Benjamin, organizer of the event alongside councilwoman Susan Keith, said since it was such a success last year, she’s excited to host it again.
“All day long there will be music playing and vendors on the street,” Benjamin said. “We’ll have the Phoenix Park area blocked off so people can walk from the St. James to the park.”
From noon to 2 p.m., a special lunch will be hosted in which residents can come out and dine with city officials. Then, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the Selma Fire Department will provide an inflatable for children to enjoy as well as a small train ride down Water Avenue.
“Children can definitely come out and enjoy this,” Benjamin said. “It’s something for the whole family.”
At 4 p.m., residents will have the opportunity to walk the riverfront and get a special glimpse of the soon-to-be amphitheater. At 5 p.m., a jazz concert will be held at Phoenix Park.
“It’ll kind of be like an all-day music festival,” Benjamin said. “It’ll definitely be a good time and I encourage the whole city to come out and enjoy it.”
