A longstanding city tradition produced another successful event over the weekend.

The 84th Annual Selma Country Club Men’s Invitational was held Friday, May 11 to Sunday, May 13.

Tommy Burns, PGA golf professional with the Selma Country Club, said the tournament was a success and things went well despite a rainy afternoon on Saturday.

“We were lucky to get it in because of the weather, but as far as we’re concerned it was a great success,” Burns said. “Considering weather and all, I think things went well.”

Burns said this year’s tournament had 90 participants, and the Ladies Golf Association and other volunteers helped with the running of the event.

He added that a lot of the players are from Alabama and compete in the tournament annually.

“I would say 70 percent of our players are repeat players who play year after year,” Burns said. “Most of our golfers are basically from Alabama, but we’ve got a few from Florida.”

Burns said the hope is for the invitational to continue to grow.

“We’re looking for it to be bigger and better for next year,” Burns said. “We’re looking for the 85th annual to be bigger and better than ever before.”

The top finisher in the Championship Flight “A” Division was Jimmy Reist of Hartselle, who shot 5-under.

Dr. Don Blanton of Selma finished on top in the Championship Flight “B” Division, shooting 2-under.
