Local churches and their youths are teaming up to give back to the community.

Area churches are teaming up to host a free City-Wide Block Party Saturday, Feb. 18 at Lions Fair Park from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for children ages kindergarten to fifth grade, with registration starting at 1:45 p.m.

The block party will include face painting, games, food, drinks and crafts among other things, and is a part of an annual retreat put on by Church Street United Methodist Church and others.

“For the past 15 years Church Street has done a retreat for our youth in this area and other churches have joined in the last nine years, but this year we’re going to have the retreat in Selma,” said Rand Smith, director of youth and college ministries at Church Street United Methodist.

“The youth that will be coming to the retreat will be the ones putting on the block party, so it’s not just church members and older people. It’s the younger people and teenagers that will be out serving the kids for the block party, which is really exciting. It’s going to be kids from all around Dallas County and even from Autauga County.”

Other churches that will be helping with the block party include Elkdale Baptist Church, First Presbyterian, First Baptist, Crosspoint Christian Church, Praise Park Ministries of The Nazarene in Valley Grande, Cathedral of Christ The King and Orrville Baptist Church.

Elkdale Baptist Church youth and education minister Bob Frazier said children attending the block party will be broken up into groups and rotated from activity to activity.
