Ira Jack “Buck” Armstrong

Ira Jack “Buck” Armstrong, 85, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, passed away on Saturday, August, 6, 2011. Jack was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 21, 1926 to Ira Truman Armstrong and Lucile Armstrong. He graduated from Ensley High School and attended University of Alabama at Birmingham. During WWII, Jack enlisted in the Merchant Marine Cadet Corps and served as a navigator on a fuel tanker. After the war, Jack went to work for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and retired after 36 years (part of that time as manager of the former Goodyear store in Selma, Alabama).
Jack is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty; one son Frank Armstrong, Maj, USAF, (Ret) (Marie) of San Antonio, Texas; three daughters Donna Taylor of Hueytown, Alabama, Debbie Scott (Joe) and Michelle Altman (Bryan) of Lehigh Acres, Florida; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
While living in Selma, Alabama, Jack was a member of the Selma Civitan Club, a member of the Selma Country Club, and a member of Church Street United Methodist Church.
While living in Lehigh Acres, Florida, Jack was a member of the Elks Lodge #2602, American Legion Post #0323, and a member of Christ United Methodist Church where he served as head usher for several years. Jack served on the Board of Directors of Sunrise Bay Condominiums on Marco Island, Florida, for 16 years, part of his service as Chairman of the Board.
Services will be held at Elmwood Chapel, 800 Dennison Avenue S.W., Birmingham, AL 35211 on Saturday, August 13, 2011. Viewing will begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by services in the Elmwood Chapel at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial in Elmwood Cemetery.
