Several senior citizens and first responders crowded the First Presbyterian Church Wednesday to officially kick off the Yellow Dot program in Dallas County.

Among them was Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman, who said he is extremely excited about the program’s life-saving potential. He also said the price of enrollment fits into any budget.

“One good thing about this program is that it’s free,” he said. “It doesn’t cost a dime. The only thing it costs is 15 minutes of your time.”

The program places a yellow dot in the rear window of a vehicle alerting first responders to vital information stored in a yellow envelope located in the glove compartment. This will ensure citizens receive the medical attention they need if they are involved in a crash.

Bringing the program to Selma was a team effort between first responders, Evelyn Cox and the RSVP program among others. Program coordinator Lora Weaver of the Northeast Alabama Traffic Safety Office said the program will allow those who participate to communicate with first responders if they are involved in a crash.

“It can actually be your voice in a situation where you can’t speak for yourself,” she said. “More importantly, it can be a tool for first responders that can save your life.”

The yellow dots can be placed on as many vehicles as a person wants and can even be used for people who are frequent passengers.

Wednesday was only the beginning, Dallas County Emergency Management Agency director Rhonda Abbott said. Enrollment opportunities will run through August.
