With their playoff lives at stake, the Dallas County Hornets 7-3 loss to Jemison typified their season.
The Panthers (20-9, 4-2) scored all seven runs with two outs, firmly securing their second-place finish and their first playoff berth in six years.
“We have given up 30 runs this season with two out,” Dallas County head coach Willie Moore said. “It was that way tonight. That game just shows what the season was like. This team has struggled to finish the game all year.”
The Hornets (12-11, 2-4) got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning When Kevin Simmons drove in Landon Denny following a leadoff walk.
The Panthers answered right back in the top of the second as Dallas County starter Justin Moore struggled to find control and walked the first two batters, Zak Kaylor and Cruz Martinez, and the two later came to score on a past ball and walk with the bases loaded respectively.
The Hornets were able to battle back in the bottom of the four and take a 4-2 lead thanks to a couple of Panther errors and a timely RBI from Austin Crocker.
Jemison was able to take the lead for good with a two-out walk to Austin Broadhead opened the floodgates for the Panthers. Chase McCary followed with a double.
Jacob Bass singled to drive in Broadhead and Scott Clements promptly doubled to drive in Bass and McCary.
The scoring concluded when Kaylor scored on a single by Martinez.
“This is a hard working group,” Jemison head coach Phillip Easterling said.
“They don’t quit and they didn’t tonight. You can’t say anything bad about them.”
“I hate it for these guys,” Moore said. “This is a fun game, but it’s only fun when you win.”
The Hornets will play again in Plantersville Monday for Senior night.
